about

When I wrote songs aimed at Nashville, I was always told what to say, what not to say and how to groom a record for the masses. With this CD, I took the opposite approach. I told my own story and hoped that my particulars might ring out and strike a more universal chord in others.

These are songs focused on my years in the South and my subsequent life in Michigan. It is a record about coming of age and having a sense of place. It is about first love, friendship, fate, loss and longing. It’s about rebellion and trying to find peace. Most of all, it is about memories and how they shape our lives.

These songs were inspired by my renewed trips to Atlanta, participating in the Radar reunion shows. I revisited my old haunts, homes and stomping grounds again. I measured the changes enacted by my years away. Coming back “home” released the floodgates of my memory; thus, this project was born. A thousand different thoughts and stories made their way through the scenarios that I sing about on the record.

In the long writing process, I think I finally found out what I think works in terms of a song. I threw away close to twice that many songs, for a variety of reasons. I was looking for sound, continuity and literary insight. Most of all, I was looking for honesty. Did the song reflect something possible in the real world? If so, I kept it, whether the subject was fictitious or not. I am happy with the final result. I hope you will enjoy it!
